The Eyemouth RNLI lifeboat and its volunteer crew were launched on Jan 30, 2017, at 5:15 p.m. in order to assist the "Bright Ray - LH 163" which was experiencing steering problems. The lifeboat was quickly on scene, four miles to the north of Eyemouth and initially stood by and escorted the trawler back to harbour, the ship being able to use her emergency steering. On the final approaches to the harbour, the skipper requested that the lifeboat take her under tow as a safety precaution should the steering problem arise again. Once under tow, the "Bright Ray" was placed safely alongside, around 50 minutes after the initial launch.
