A JOINT VENTURE between New Zealand's largest shipper and the Port of Tauranga is beginning to change the nation's supply chain landscape at rival Ports of Auckland's expense, reports London's Loadstar.
Half-year results show Tauranga catching up to Auckland, the country's traditional container port following last year's three-way deal with Maersk and Kotahi Logistics, itself a joint venture of dairy giant Fonterra and meat packer Silver Fern Farms.
Under the deal, Kotahi commits to exporting 1.8 million TEU through Tauranga over 10 years - taken away by Maersk's Southern Star service, which dropped its Auckland call.
Maersk also undertakes to upgrade capacity from the 4,500-TEU vessels it currently operates to 6,500-TEUers.
As a result, Tauranga container volumes grew 12 per cent year on year to 426,512 TEU in the six months ending December 31.
The port also saw transshipment volumes increase 28.9 per cent to 71,921 TEU, while milk powder exports increased 10.9 per cent as the volume agreements with Kotahi took effect and frozen meat exports soared 42.9 per cent to 262,000 tonnes.
Part of the deal was Tauranga selling a 49 per cent stake in Timaru Container Terminal (TCTS) on the south island, on which it made a NZ$4.1 million gain in the last six months. This gives Kotahi considerable say in how infrastructure is to be developed.
