The 'Chem Norma' remained stuck on June 1, three days after she ran aground on the St. Lawrence Seaway at Morrisburg. The efforts of the tugs 'Ocean K. Rusby' and 'Ocean Pierre Julien' on May 30/31 weren’t enough to free her. More tugs and the offloading of cargo might be required to free the ship. Officials have now come up with a plan to “wiggle” her free to break the suction of the boggy bottom of the St. Lawrence Seaway. No spill or damage was reported. The salvage effort was also being monitored by officials from the Canadian Coast Guard, federal and provincial environment ministries and Transport Canada. Once freed, the 'Chem Norma' will be taken to anchorage in Morrisburg for an inspection, then on to the lock at Iroquois for a further inspection by divers before she can go on her way to Sarnia. The ship ran aground at 4:05 a.m. on May 29 due to steering problems but it happened outside of the shipping channel, so other marine traffic was not impeded. Report with photos: ottawacitizen.com...
