BIDS are expected to be called next month for the operation of the new mega-container ship berths in Taiwan's Kaohsiung port.
The facilities are under construction with two-and-a-half berths in the first phase of the project to come on stream by June 2018.
"We are already in talks with some international lines such as those from the G6 Alliance and 2M, and international operators like PSA and DP World," said harbour master Ang Pai Feng.
Kaohsiung, he said, is hoping to attract international players to invest in the port, reports Seatrade Maritime News.
A total of five deepwater berths - with a total length of 2,415 metres and draft of 18 metres - will be built at the Container Terminal Number 7 Project, with the remaining two-and-a-half berths to be completed under phase two, with a total investment of US$1.05 billion.
When fully completed from mid-2019, Kaohsiung port will boost its capacity by 4.5 million TEU and be able to accommodate mega-sized containerships of up to 22,000 TEU.
At present, Kaohsiung has six container centres operated by Lien Hai, Wan Hai, OOCL, Hon Ming, APL, Hyundai, Evergreen, Hanjin Shipping, Kao Ming, and Taiwan International Ports Corp (TIPC), which controls the former four port authorities of Kaohsiung, Keelung, Taichung and Hualien.
Kaohsiung port is forecasting container throughput will increase by 2.9 per cent this year to 10.9 million TEU compared to the 10.6 million TEU handled in 2014, said Mr Wang.
