Suez trumps Panama, Maersk redeploys TP-7 from Asia to US east coast
DANISH Maersk Line, the world's largest carrier, plans to revamp its Far East-US east coast service by unveiling a new loop via the Suez Canal in April with the use of eleven 6,000-7,000 TEU idle ships and chartered newbuildings, according to maritime analyst Alphaliner.
This new service will replace the existing TP-7 Far East-US east coast service via Panama that is operating with ten 4,500-5,100 TEU panamax ships. Rotation of the TP-7 loop includes Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, Nansha, Shenzhen-Yantian, Shanghai, Busan, Miami, Savannah, Charleston, Miami, Manzanillo (Panama) and back to Kaohsiung.
With a deployment of 11 ships, the new TP-7 loop via Suez Canal will call at Ningbo, Shanghai, Shenzhen-Yantian, Hong Kong, Tanjung Pelepas, Suez Canal, Malta-Med Hub, Savannah, Charleston, Miami and back to Malta-Med Hub, Suez Canal, Kaohsiung and back to Ningbo.
This change is expected to increase the weekly capacity by 25 per cent compared to the existing TP-7 loop. Also, it will complement Maersk's TP-3/TP-9 service that runs as a pendulum service for US east coast-Far East-US west coast trade. Rotation of this string includes Shanghai, Ningbo, Hong Kong, Shenzhen-Yantian, Tanjung Pelepas, Suez Canal, New York, Norfolk, Savannah, Cape of Good Hope, Tanjung Pelepas, Hong Kong, Shenzhen-Yantian, Shanghai (Yangshan + Waigaoqiao), Busan, Seattle, Vancouver, Yokohama and back to Shanghai.
