Storm caused discovery of cocaine smuggle
140 kg cocaine, which had been carried within a container aboard the "Maersk Niteroi" were found in Berlin on Jan 6, 2014.
The container had been loaded with 1150 kg bananas and the drugs which both were destined for Rotterdam.
But the ship suffered a delay of six days due to stormy weather which it encountered coming from Santa Marta in Colombia, from where it had sailed on Dec 10, 2013.
Due to the delay the receiver of the cargo refused to take it, and ship went on to Hamburg with the drugs still on board, and docked on Dec 27. Here the bananas were sold and distributed further. When employees of supermarkets opened seven boxes with bananas, they found the cocaine-bags.
