Smoke was still emanating from the 'SSL Kolkata' on week after she was devastated by a fire in the Bay of Bengal on June 14. Minimal smoke still emerged, while the salvage operation was in progress. The salvage team failed to board the vessel on June 20 because of bad weather. The team had planned to inspect the ship during the day to assess the damage it has suffered and find out how to pull it out of the shallow waters about 18 km from the Sunderbans and take it to a port. Fire-fighting and technical professionals from the salvage company SMIT, who had arrived from the Netherlands on Jund 19, left Haldia for the ship around 1.30 p.m. on a Coast Guard vessel. They were supposed to start in the morning but could not because of the choppy sea. Four members of the SMIT team had boarded the vessel on June 19 and made a preliminary assessment. Now the team was expected to board the ship on Jue 21 morning. They will also measure the depth of the water there to plan a way to tow the anchored ship into deeper waters. The tug was scheduled to arrive near the 'SSL Kolkata' on June 23. A Coast Guard team that surveyed the waters around the 'SSL Kolkata' from a Dornier aircraft did not spot any signs of an oil spill. At least seven containers with hazardous chemicals were on the ship. Report with photo: https://www.telegraphindi...
