THE South Carolina Ports Authority has been awarded a US$20 million federal grant to build infrastructure at the Wando Welch Terminal in support of the deepening of the Port of Charleston's harbour to 52 feet to handle mega ships.
The US Department of Transportation awarded the Port Infrastructure Development Grant for the Wando Welch Terminal's construction of a toe wall and the deepening of three berths.
'The US Department of Transportation grant is crucial to realising these necessary infrastructure projects related to our Charleston harbour deepening project,' port authority CEO Jim Newsome said.
The toe wall is needed to maintain a stable slope beneath the wharf, as well as provide an edge for berth deepening and to enable future maintenance dredging.
The toe wall construction and dredging work will cost $33 million, with the port authority contributing $13 million and the grant contributing the remainder.
South Carolina Ports has invested $2 billion in recent years to enhance infrastructure and raise capacity as cargo volumes continue to rise. Container volumes have doubled at the port of Charleston since 2009 and continue to grow every year.
