OMAN's Sohar Port has reported that container volume in Q3 2015 grew by a staggering 53 per cent to 142,000 TEU from 93,000 TEU in the same period last year.
The surge is box throughput was mainly due to the relocation of all commercial traffic from Port Sultan Qaboos in Muscat to Sohar from September of last year, the Hellenic Shipping New reported.
The combined box throughput for Sohar and Port Sultan Qaboos shows an organic growth rate of 5 per cent to 407,000 TEU compared to the same period last year.
Bulk cargo at Sohar also grew by 9 per cent in comparison to Q3 last year, increasing from 10.4 million tonnes to 11.3 million tonnes in Q3 of 2015.
The general cargo terminal at Sohar also posted significant growth throughput in the first nine months of the year with an increase 60 per cent reaching a combined volume of 2.3 million tonnes. Much of this growth has been captured from other regional ports.
CEO of Sohar Port, Andre Toet, said: "A 53 per cent year-on-year increase in container throughput in Q3 is testament to the success of our operations here at Sohar. Our rapid growth has positioned Sohar as a significant regional hub, and we are fully committed to building a sustainable logistics infrastructure that will support Oman in achieving our Vision 2020 objectives."
