THE Liberian-flagged 1,740-TEU German-owned Hansa Brandenburg that caught fire en route from Singapore to Durban Wednesday and still reported ablaze 200 miles off Mauritius, was under charter to Singapore's PIL.
The geared vessel, built in 2003, and once known as the Maersk Auckland, is owned by Leonhardt & Blumberg. It caught fire and was abandoned after the 17 crewmen were unable to contain the blaze that spread from the container hold to engulf the ship's superstructure.
The crew were rescued and reported to be safe and taken aboard the commercial partnering vessel 2,209-TEU Donau Trader, on its way back from South Africa to Singapore.
This follows the fire aboard and sinking of the 8,000-TEU MOL Comfort in recent days, which first split before sinking in the Indian Ocean off Yemen on its way from Singapore to Jeddah.
