THE International Ship Recycling Association (ISRA) has praised the European Parliament for adopting regulation that compels European Union flagged ships to be scrapped at EU-approved costly eco-friendly yards.
Under the rules, shipowners will be forbidden from beaching ships in India where people earn their keep salvaging the metal, and instead be forced to go to high-priced approved ship breaking yards that meet the new high standards of ship recycling.
"This is great news for all the yards which have invested in green ship recycling facilities. Our members are ready to cooperate with the EU to put the wording into practise," said ISRA chairman Adem Simsek at the news of an assured supply of conscript customers.
ISRA vowed to ensure that its members are qualified to meet the criteria of the European list of approved ship breaking yards.
Said ISRA secretary general Bernard Veldhoven: "ISRA is ready to cooperate with shipowners to realise the regulation. We need to work together to complete the goals of the EU."
