The port authorities of Port Elizabeth have detained the 'Lada', being suspected of carrying weapons and explosives. They discovered explosives on board the vessel on Aug 19, 2018, while conducting operations in the Port of Ngqura, which lies 20 kilometres northeast of Port Elizabeth. The contraband was desribed as ‘weapons of mass destruction’. The vessel anchored 15 kilometres off the Nelson Mandela Bay ni pos. 33° 51.48' S 025° 47.78' E as ordered by local authorities. While authorities have confirmed the bust, they’re remaining mum on the exact nature of the illicit cargo found onboard. The value of explosives and weapons found on board the Russian vessel was about R50 million. The Russian vessel was inspected following a tip-off, after it had already offloaded 14 containers at the port. It had produced all the relevant permits relating to the cargo it offloaded on South African shores. The containers were dispatched by a company named Solar India. However, while the initial drop-off was all above board, the tip-off alerted authorities to a further 20 containers which remained stowed away. These containers, in direct contravention of numerous laws, held illegal weapons and explosives. A full investigation has now been launched by South Africa’s elite criminal investigative organisation, The Hawks. The 'Lada' and its operators were accused of contravening the Nonproliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction Act, as well as the Explosives Act. The illicit containers carried by the Lada were destined for Lagos and the United States. The vessel had arrived in South African waters after a stop-over in Madagascar.
