The process was started with then docking of the 8,888-TEU OOCL Taipei, which berthed at the terminal as ship's crew and terminal staff prepared to hook up the shore power supply system.
"During project design and construction, the terminal had received great support and guidance from all levels of government bodies including Shenzhen municipal and Bao An District government," said the DaChan Bay press release.
"With the shore power system, air quality can be improved with vessels switching off its auxiliary engine which will reduce the carbon emission. At the same time, the working environment in the vessel engine room can be improved during maintenance with noise reduction," it said.
As one of the first terminals in the world to deploy a full fleet of electric RTGs, (rubber tyre gantry straddle carriers) it also adopts environmental protection measures such as LNG tractors, innovations in equipment energy saving and resources utilisation.
DaChan Bay Terminals (DaChan Bay) is situated in the West Shenzhen Port area. It is the newest international container terminal serving the Pan-Pearl River Delta cargo catchment areas. It is also an important vehicle import harbour in south China.
The terminal covers 112 hectares with five berths along its 1,830-metre quay with 600 metres of back up land and 15.5 metres alongside with plans to dredge to 18 metres.
Occupying a location that encompasses well-developed land and waterway access to both the eastern and western sides of the Pearl, DaChan Bay is the newest container terminal.
The DaChan Bay release also said the terminal provides shipping lines ways to take cargo in the new catchment areas as factories relocate inland and to the west where competitive labour costs can be found.
Managed by Modern Terminals Limited, which has more than 40 years of container terminal operations in Hong Kong, DaChan Bay has adopted Modern Terminals' expertise and a culture that values mutual trust and respect, accountability and customer focus.
