Seafarers Open Up About mental health Thanks to VIKAND’s New Technology
Global maritime healthcare leader
VIKAND reports a rise in the number of seafarers discussing their mental health due to its innovative wellness data-collection tool. This first-of-its-kind solution aims to improve crew welfare and mental well-being across the maritime industry.Speaking at the recent
International Maritime Human Factors Symposium, Ronald Spithout, Managing Director of OneHealth by VIKAND, emphasized the importance of "Crew Asset Management" and real-time data technologies in enhancing
seafarer support. The tool, developed by Danish tech company Scoutbase, allows seafarers to anonymously share their feelings and concerns through "welfare pulse sampling" or "nudging." This involves simple, targeted questions designed to gauge a person’s mental state. Based on responses, follow-up questions are generated, and if necessary, a voluntary call with a mental health professional can be arranged.

This user-friendly approach has achieved an impressive 80% engagement rate, helping identify issues early and offering timely interventions for seafarers in need.Spithout highlighted the role of digitalization: “With this technology, we can better protect our most valuable asset—our people. Real-time wellness tracking enables us to offer unprecedented levels of medical advice and support to seafarers. It’s a significant step forward for the industry.”Yassin Askar, co-founder of Scoutbase, added: “Anonymous feedback from seafarers and shore-based personnel gives ship operators vital insights, helping improve safety and operational standards. Prioritizing the well-being of seafarers is essential for the entire industry.”The symposium also featured several presentations at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), focusing on the safety and well-being of seafarers. Experts from various maritime organizations and educational institutions shared insights on improving crew welfare and operational safety standards. This new technology marks a progressive shift in the industry, ensuring that seafarers feel supported and heard while enhancing overall safety and operational excellence at sea.
