DP WORLD's London Gateway terminal, which is not to open until November, made an unscheduled operational debut with DB Schenker Rail UK whisking away a trainload of containers from fire stricken Zim ship.
The 10,062-TEU Zim Rotterdam, the biggest ever to enter the Thames Estuary, suffered a fire at sea that destroyed 20 containers, and was diverted from Hutchison's Felixstowe because its special needs would hold up operations.
The first train out of London Gateway left the port at 2am Tuesday for DB Schenker Rail's Manchester Trafford Park terminal.
DB Schenker Rail UK worked with London Gateway crew to put an operational plan in place to move the unscheduled cargo out by rail.
Said Schenker UK logistics chief Carsten Hinne: "This incredible effort demonstrates how the industry has come together to help support Zim and its customers. I haven't seen collective support like this before and it's amazing to think we put a service together from a non-operational port."
Said London Gateway spokesman Charles Meaby: "We want to reassure cargo owners and forwarders that we are working around the clock to make sure boxes are dispatched as soon as possible."
At the time of the Zim Rotterdam's arrival, London Gateway on the lower Thames was in test mode on non-commercial cargo as it was building up for its official launch.
