SAUDI Arabia's newest and first privately owned and funded port development, King Abdullah Port (KAP) in Rabigh, has handled its first export shipment, comprising 54 containers of polymer material that was loaded onto the MSC Daniela to be shipped to Singapore.
The petrochemical products made by Rabigh Refining and Petrochemical Company (PetroRabigh) were delivered to the port located in the King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) by Almajdouie Logistics and its sister company Rabigh Petrochemical Logistics (RPL).
King Abdullah Port is strategically located to serve east-west transhipment and domestic cargo. The port covers an area measuring 15 million square metres, and its annual container handling capacity on completion will be 20 million TEU with 30 deep-water berths, repored Arab News.
President and CEO of PetroRabigh, Abdullah bin Saleh Al-Suwailem, said: "The shipment is a significant step forward in the export operations of PetroRabigh products due to the proximity of the port to the headquarters of the company's operations."
He said the new port on the Red Sea coast and located just 100 kilometres north of Jeddah would reduce logistics costs by enabling freight to reach global markets faster.
"The start of new port will ease the congestion at Jeddah Port and Jeddah City but we have long way to go," said Almajdouie Logistics' president, Abdullah Almajdouie.
Regional analyst Jarmo Kotilaine added: "The port is an important infrastructure investment which is, among other things, aligned with Saudi Arabia's strategy of developing downstream industries so as to drive value and job creation."
