SAUDI ARABIA's King Abdullah port on the west coast handled 1,236,075 TEU in the first half of the year, a year-on-year increase of 50.5 per cent. The strong performance follows container volume growth of 21 per cent in 2017.
'Since the launch of operations five years ago, King Abdullah port has become the second largest container port in the kingdom [of Saudi Arabia] and it is moving forward towards becoming a major trade hub and global logistics platform on the Red Sea,' said King Abdullah port CEO Rayan Qutub.
'Located on the main maritime line linking the east and the west, King Abdullah port aims to increase the kingdom's competitiveness in the World Bank's Logistics Performance Index (LPI); therefore, effectively contributing to accomplishing the logistics objectives of Vision 2030.'
At full build-out the port will have an annual capacity to handle 20 million TEU, 1.5 million car-equivalent units and 15 million tonnes of clean bulk cargo.
