FRAPORT Ground Services at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Lufthansa have teamed up to co-test the Mototok Spacer 8600, a remote-controlled aircraft tug that is designed for use with the Airbus 320 and Boeing 737 family aircraft.
Fraport Ground Services operates the remote-controlled electric tug vehicle and the German airline supplies the aircraft to test out the pushback procedure which requires the e-tug to push the aircraft backwards out of its parking spot and on to the taxiway, reported New York's Air Cargo World.
The Mototok Spacer 8600 is one-third the size of many conventional tugs and can be stationed and charged in a fixed parking position. E-vehicles can manage between 30 and 50 pushback procedures without having to be charged.
Lufthansa airport vice president Jorg Mnich said these e-vehicles can help 'ensure a stable flight schedule and ultimately give our customers the reliability they require.'
