INDIA's Mumbai gateway, Jawaharal Nehru port, will postpone a 30 per cent general rate increase and a 70 per hike for containers planned for September after a ruling from India's Tariff Authority for Major Ports (TAMP).
Port stakeholders will meet TAMP in a joint hearing, reported Newark's Journal of Commerce, which added that increases had been approved by TAMP in March 2011 but were to lapse in April.
The Mumbai-Nhava Sheva Ship Agents Association said Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust's move to increase vessel-related charges is totally "unjustified" and should not be allowed in the interest of trade.
"Any increase in such charges would adversely impact the overall viability of vessel operations," the association said, although it did agree to a 10 per cent hike in container-related charges "in light of a surge in container arrivals at the port".
