FOLLOWING Houthi missile attacks prompting diversions away from the red Sea, Maersk's bunker consumption has surged to its highest level since 2021, reports Vancouver's Ship & Bunker.
According to an earnings release, Maersk consumed a total of 2.796 million tonnes of bunker fuel in the first quarter, marking a 15.9 per cent increase compared to the previous year and the highest consumption since Q4 2021.
During the first quarter, Maersk paid an average of US$625 per tonne for its bunker fuel, remaining relatively unchanged from the previous year.
'The rerouting south of the Cape of Good Hope led to higher bunker consumption and higher operating costs,' said the company.
