SHENZHEN Port Authority and Canada's Halifax Port Authority recently signed a sister port relationship agreement, Xinhua reports.
The agreement will further port of Halifax's growth strategy in the development of both Asian and European trade as Canada's Atlantic Gateway.
Halifax, eastern Canada's principal Atlantic port, is the second largest natural deepwater port and the deepest ice-free port in the world.
It was one of the most important first and last call ports in North America before widespread air travel, and the home of the world's third largest merchant fleet by virtue of trans-Atlantic convoys that kept England fed during the World War II.
Shenzhen, with four large terminals at Yantian, Chiwan, Shekou and Dachan Bay, has been the world's fourth largest container port for 10 consecutive years and China's second largest for 16 years. It is also a sister port to another 14 world famous ports including Rotterdam and Hamburg.
Said Halifax port authority chairman Geoffrey Machum: "This agreement furthers the Halifax Port Authority's growth strategy in the development of both Asian and European trade as Canada's Atlantic Gateway."
