PSA's Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT) in India has held a cake cutting ceremony to celebrate handling its one millionth TEU during the call of CMA CGM's 4.300-TEU Bermuda on October 18, just 20 months after the facility commenced operations in February 2018.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) chairman Shri Sanjay Sethi, CMA CGM India managing director Ugo Vincent, PSA India managing director Mike Formoso and management and staff from all three companies and the port authority attended the event.
The CMA CGM vessel is deployed on the Swahili Express (SWAX) service that links Mumbai to East Africa and the Gulf, and is also operated by service partners Emirates Shipping Line and Hapag Lloyd, reported Hellenic Shipping News.
BMCT has provided the SWAX service with 100 per cent berth on arrival to date, allowing the service to catch up any delays in the schedule. A second milestone was also achieved during the call - the highest number of moves of a SWAX call at the terminal to date, totalling 1,868 moves.
Given the nature of the trade lane, the service also handles large amounts of out of gauge and breakbulk cargo, a fast-growing market segment at BMCT on account of its facilities and available room to grow for carriers.
Said Mr Formoso: 'Given the strong relationship between PSA and CMA CGM not only in India but globally, it is apt that BMCT's millionth TEU is handled on a CMA CGM vessel on the SWAX service - the same combination for the first service call at BMCT. Reaching this point spurs us on towards higher volume and service standards.'
