SINGAPORE's PSA International has become the only global port operator active in the Beibu Gulf (aka Gulf of Tonkin) after entering a joint venture with Beibu Gulf Port Group (BPG) and Pacific International Lines (PIL).
Singapore's PIL sees great potential in its populous hinterland with Qinzhou having a population of 1.3 million and Nanning's 1.7 million people only 60 miles away.
"We recognise the tremendous potential of the BPCT as a major international container hub port to support the further development of industries," said PIL managing director SS Teo.
The terminal will open in the fourth quarter and have a 1,533-metre quay line with 15.1 metres alongside, an annual capacity of three million TEU and quay cranes that span 23 rows of containers and can handle the biggest ships afloat.
Under the terms of the deal, PSA will operate a new container terminal in Qinzhou City, in Guangxi province, as the PSA International Container Terminal Co., Ltd (BPCT).
The terminal is PSA's first foray in the south western China area bordering Vietnam, and said to be one of the fastest growing economic regions.
Accessible to southeast Asia by land and sea, the region has been earmarked by the Chinese government as a key area for coastal development and collaboration with ASEAN countries.
The terminal will support the container trade growth in the region and serve the vast hinterlands of Guangxi, Sichuan, Chongqing and Hunan, said the PSA statement.
It will also connect the region to key shipping routes linking China to ASEAN countries, East Africa and the Mediterranean.
Under the action plan for the "One Belt, One Road" development, which the Chinese government proclaimed in March, Guangxi is being positioned as an international corridor linking to the ASEAN region, and a strategic pillar to support the opening-up and development of the southwest and mid-south regions of China.
Said PSA chief executive Tan Chong Meng: "Guangxi-Beibu Gulf's strategic location, established transport infrastructure and extensive hinterland offer tremendous potential for our terminal to support the remarkable growth in the region."
Said Beibu Gulf Port Group chairman Zhou Xiao Xi: "Tapping on the mutual expertise of all parties, the collaboration between PSA, BPG and PIL will help to spur economic growth in the region."
