THE world's biggest container shipper, Maersk Line, is to change the westbound hub on its West Mediterranean (Westmed) Transatlantic service, which is operated with CMA CGM and dubbed the Amerigo Express from Malaga to Port Tangier.
The change is being made "to create better network connections with other ports within the Mediterranean, Africa and the US", said Maersk.
The first vessel sailing on the revised Westmed will be the CMA CGM Jamaica, expected to depart Tangier on July 6 and the revised rotation will be Marsaxlokk, Livorno, Genoa, Marseilles-Fos, Barcelona, Valencia, Port Tangiers, Newark, Norfolk, Savannah, Algeciras and back to Marsaxlokk.
The eastbound hub will remain Algeciras.
The service, in which Hapag-Lloyd, MOL, and Maersk's subsidiary Safmarine take slots, is operated with six vessels, with four provided by Maersk Line and two from CMA CGM with each ship averaging 4,287 TEU.
