THE Port of Le Havre, which includes Rouen and docks along the Seine to Paris, has announced it has been elected by Hong Kong's Asia Cargo News for being Best Green Seaport.
The port will elaborate on the good news on July 3 where the information will be delivered to the journalists by HAROPA management.
The environment, said the port authority, is the central focus for HAROPA strategy. Reconciling economic development and environmental conservation is a major issue for the ports on the Seine, it said.
Forward-looking management of wilderness areas and natural resources and control of the impact of port activities on the environment is a major focus.
Support for projects by integrating environmental issues and consultation from the design stage onwards
HAROPA's Environmental Strategic Plan includes 253 actions divided into four priority areas: Integration of the ports in their natural habitat, control of their environmental impacts, quality management system and ISO 14 001 certification.
The port authority emits 2.5 times less CO2 per tonne transported than road transport.
The statement also said the Port of Rouen in improving access for shipping providing another metre to the 11.3 metres of low tide clearance and 11.7 metre at high tide.
This is being accomplished by dredging the 120 kilometres of channel separating Honfleur from Rouen a EUR175 million (US$196) project that began in 2012.
