Port of Hong Kong posts 10pc first half box decline to 9.2 million TEU
THE Port of Hong Kong posted a 8.3 per cent second quarter year-on-year decline in container throughput to 4.87 million TEU, according to new report from the Census and Statistics Department.
For the first half of 2016, the Port of Hong Kong handled 9.20 million TEU, representing a decrease of 10.1 per cent compared with a year earlier.
Within the second quarter total, laden containers decreased 7.7 per cent to 4.18 million TEU year on year while empties fell 11.8 per cent 690,000 TEU. Among laden containers, inbound boxes dropped 6.6 per cent to 2.19 million TEU while outbound boxes fell 8.9 per cent to 1.99 million TEU.
Within this total, laden containers decreased 10.1 per cent to 7.84 million TEU year on year while empties fell 10.5 per cent to 1.35 million TEU.
Among first half laden containers, inbound boxes dropped 8.2 per cent year on year to 4.05 million TEU while outbound containers fell 12 per cent to 3.80 million TEU.
In the second quarter, sea borne laden containers decreased 5.8 per cent to 3.05 million TEU while river borne laden containers fell 12.3 per cent year on year to 1.14 million TEU.
Within inbound laden containers, imports decreased 6.4 per cent to 710,000 TEU while inbound transshipments fell 6.7 per cent in the second quarter to 1.48 million TEU.
For outbound laden containers, quarterly exports decreased by eight per cent 610,000 while outbound transshipments fell 9.2 per cent to 1.38 million TEU.
In the first half of 2016, sea borne laden containers decreased 10.8 per cent to 5.63 million TEU while river borne boxes fell 8.1 per cent to 2.21 million TEU.
Within inbound laden containers, imports decreased 7.4 per cent to 1.3 million TEU while inbound transshipments fell 8.6 per cent to 2.75 million TEU. For outbound laden containers, exports decreased 12.1 per cent to 1.14 million TEU while outbound transshipments fell 11.9 per cent to 12.66 million TEU.
The Port of Hong Kong posted a 8.2 per cent second quarter year-on-year decline in overall cargo throughput to 62.8 million tonnes, according to the same report.
Within this total, inbound cargo fell 10.4 per cent ward to 36.3 million tonnes while outbound cargo declined five per cent top 26.4 million tonnes.
For the first half of 2016, cargo throughput decreased 13.4 per cent year on year to 118.4 million tonnes.
Within this total, inbound cargo volume decreased 16.7 per cent to 68.6 million tonnes while outbound throughput fell 8.5 per cent to 49.8 million tonnes.
Within port cargo, sea borne cargo decreased 10.1 per cent to 40.1 million tonnes in the second quarter year on year while river borne cargo slipped 4.5 per cent to 22.7 million tonnes.
Within inbound port cargo, imports decreased 12.2 per cent to 19.5 million tonnes in the second quarter while and inbound transshipments fell 8.1 per cent to 16.8 million tonnes.
For outbound port cargo, exports (including domestic exports and re-exports) increased 3.6 per cent compared with a year earlier to 11 million tonnes, while outbound transshipments decreased 10.3 per cent to 15.4 million tonnes.
Within inbound port cargo, imports decreased 21.4 per cent in the first half to 37.8 million tonnes year on year while inbound transshipments fell 10.3 per cent to 30.9 million tonnes.
For outbound port cargo, exports decreased by 2.1 per cent to 20.2 million tonnes while outbound transshipments fell 12.4 per cent to 29.5 million tonnes.
Comparing the second quarter of 2016 with the second quarter of 2015, a double-digit increase was recorded in the tonnage of inbound port cargo loaded in Malaysia (+15.8 per cent).
Double-digit decreases were recorded in the tonnage of inbound port cargo loaded in Indonesia (-31.2 per cent), the US (-18.3 per cent), Taiwan (-17.6 per cent), the mainland of China (-16.3 per cent) and Thailand (-11.6 per cent).
For outbound port cargo, a triple-digit increase was recorded in the tonnage of outbound port cargo discharged in Macao (+178.8 per cent). But double-digit decreases were recorded in the tonnage of outbound port cargo discharged in Malaysia (-19 per cent), Japan (-11.7 per cent), the mainland of China (-11.2 per cent) and Korea (-10.8 per cent).
