THE Port of Brownsville, the most southerly point in continental United States maintained its high ranking for the value of foreign exports for the sixth year running.
Port officials says increasing activity in the FTZ and at the port is largely due to the rapid growth of Mexico's manufacturing sector.
For 2017, the Texas Foreign-Trade Zone (FTZ) (No 62) ranked second for exports, according to the US FTZ Board's annual report to Congress, reported the Brownsville Herald.
The port handled US$2.8 billion in exported goods during the year, while the FTZ handled more than $2.5 billion in imported goods, putting it in 25th place nationally for imports.
The FTZ has ranked in the top five nationally for exports every year since 2012, and 2017 was the second time it has taken second place for export value.
The FTZ Board defines FTZs as 'secure areas under the supervision of US Customs and Border Protection, considered outside the customs territory of the United States for the purposes of duty payment'.
The port administers FTZ No 62, which encompasses FINSA Industrial Park at Los Indios, NAFTA Industrial Park in Brownsville, Brownsville South Padre Island Air Cargo Complex, Port of Harlingen and Valley International Airport Industrial Park.
