CATALONIA's largest port, the Port de Barcelona in Spain handled 1.6 million TEU in the first ten months of the year, an increase of 3 per cent over the same period last year.
Exports were again higher than imports, totalling 543,614 TEU, a rise of 7 per cent over last year spurred by the excellent results of the Short Sea Shipping (SSS) which connects the Catalan capital and Italian destinations, in particular Genoa, Civitavecchia, Livorno, Savona and Porto Torres.
The foreign markets which grew the most during the first ten months of the year were China and the USA (+26 per cent), according to Catalan News Agency.
Imports grew by 8.5 per cent to 402,209 TEU over the same ten months of last year and the main market of origin was South Korea which grew the most by 64 per cent, followed by India (+13 per cent) and China (12 per cent).
In the ten months to the end of October, the port also handled 9.6 million tonnes of liquid cargo, especially hydrocarbons. Amongst them, petrol registered the highest growth with an increase of 35 per cent compared to the same period last year.
The port's vehicle traffic totalled 732,500 units from January to October, an increase of 19 per cent over the same period last year.
