BRITAIN's Peel Ports Group is investing GBP300 million (US$464 million) to build container terminal Liverpool2, enabling the port to dock two 13,500 TEUers at the same time.
Liverpool2 will become the UK's largest transatlantic deep-sea container terminal, doubling the capacity of Port of Liverpool.
It will also become Europe's first semi-automated container terminal, according to the company statement.
Liverpool2 is linked to other parts of the UK by 10 motorways within 16 kilometre, rail connections and Manchester Ship Canal, says Peel Ports.
The group says, "Liverpool2's economic and low carbon route provides 'ship-to-door' access to global shippers to enter major import centres in the UK, favouring UK-based exporters".
Peel Ports Group owns and operates six most important ports of the UK and Ireland. Its annual cargo throughput hits 70 million tonnes, making 15 per cent of the UK's total. In 2013, Peel Ports reported revenue of GBP626 million.
