Rotterdam's Woonbron wants to get rid of the SS "Rotterdam", the corporation announced on June 6, 2011.
Woonbron intends to sell the ship as quickly as possible, "but for a reasonable price." The former steamship is berthed on the waterfront of the peninsula Katendrecht being used as a hotel.
In February 2010 the former flagship of the Holland America Line opened the doors to the public. The first year there were around 500,000 visitors and sales totaled 40 million Euro. The operating company expected100000 visitors in the first year about 100,000 people.
But setbacks, including the removal of asbestos, increased the renovation costs to over 240 million Eruo. The opening was originally planned for the summer of 2009, but had to be postponed. Woonbron got in big financial trouble and was temporarily placed under financial supervision.
