"Each vessel is expected to cost around US$10 million. We are looking for second-hand vessels," said Oman Shipping CEO Tarik Al Junaidi.
The owner, better known for tankers, bulkers and gas carriers, already runs coastal services linking to the UAE.
The loop between Jebel Ali and Sohar is at almost 100 per cent capacity using a 2,500-TEU ship. It is also operating a 400-TEU multipurpose vessel.
Mr Al Junaidi believes low second-hand vessel values means now is a good time to buy.
"Recently, main line operators, such as CMA CGM and MSC are sending their containers from Sohar to Duqm," he said.
