The seaport police in Rotterdam was investigating how the 'Bow Jubail' hit a dock in the 3rd petrol port in the Botlek area afternoon of June 23, 2018, focussing on the VHF communication between the captain, the pilot and the tug of Kotug Smit. The tanker was mooring at the LBC jetty with a pilot on board. Kotug Smit's tug was behind the ship which allided with the jetty at 1.40 p.m. and was breached at the starboards side stern. Fuel oil from the bunker tanks of the unloaded ship. 217 tons of fuel oil leaked into the water before the breach could be patched. The 'Bow Jubail' had on board a crew of 29, two Scandinavians and 27 from the Philippines. No one was injured in the incident. After the accident the seaport police requested the voice recorder from the 'Bow Jubail' in the course of the investigations. Fire boats and vessels of Rijkswaterstaat and the Port of Rotterdam tried to contain the pollution. The 3rd petrol port was barred off with oil booms Cleaning up of the oil by specialist companies was expected to take some days. A strong smell of oil was remarked also in Vlaardingen and Schiedam. Some of the oil reached the Maas and spread to Hoek van Holland, thereby also affecting birds which were treated at Maassluis, Hoek van Holland and Rozenburg. There was a chance of oil pollution beaches too. The marinas in Schiedam, Vlaardingen, Maassluis and Hoogvliet were closed to prevent further spreadign of the oil for an uncertain time. The tanker shifted from the Geul Port to another jetty at the LBC Tank Terminal after the accident. The Port of Rotterdam Authority has held Odfjell Tankers liable as the owner of the ship. The Norwegian shipping company has also deployed a team to determine the cause. Kotug Smit fully cooperated with the investigation and has also started an internal investigation into the cause.
