Import cargo volume reached a record 84,835 laden TEU, breaking the previous record of 84,023 TEU set in March 2015, reported American Shipper. Laden exports in July totalled 74,821 TEU, down from 77,573 TEU last year.
July import volumes rose 5.4 per cent year on year, with the surge coming at the start of the peak season, when shippers transport additional cargo ahead of holiday and back-to-school sales.
?Retailers have been forecasting strong peak season import numbers this year and so far, they're right," said port maritime director John Driscoll.
Overall, the port moved 50,227 empties last month compared to 48,519 during the same month last year.
