THE Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has posted a 5.4 per cent year-on-year increase in container volume for 2014 to 5,772,303 TEU, reports American Shipper.
Record volumes allowed the port to maintain its position as the busiest on the east coast with nearly 30 per cent market share.
But automotive ro-ro cargo fell 12.8 per cent to 393,931 in 2014. Big imports were furniture, beverages and appliances with 923,975 containers coming from China, 179,715 from Germany and 176,621 from India.
Some 2,432 ships called last year, down 2.3 per cent. This was attributed to the increasing number of bigger ships, a trend expected to accelerate once the Bayonne Bridge is raised.
After that, postpanamax ships can enter the port in 2016, by which time the dredging of the navigation channel to 50 feet will be able to accommodate them.
On dock ExpressRail also reported record volumes, up 9.3 per cent year on year to 465,405 containers. The previous annual record was set in 2012, with a throughput of 433,481 containers.
The authority's US$600 million earmarked for ExpressRail investment include plans to build new rail facilities in Greenville Yard in Jersey City, considered critical to improving port efficiency and competitiveness.
"Our port is continuing to reap the benefits of an uptick in the economy, which has resulted in the hiring of more dockworkers and economic growth for the region," said port authority executive director Pat Foye.
The port authority also noted that during the past year, 601 new longshoremen and checkers have been certified by the Waterfront Commission to work at the port with 575 already on the job and 24 are preparing to start.
