CARGO flow between north east Asia and Australia posted a nine per cent year-on-year gain in the fourth quarter and a 2.6 per cent gain from the previous quarter, according to London's Drewry Maritime Research.
Third quarter GDP growth was disappointing at 0.6 per cent compared to the previous quarter, while still gaining 2.3 per cent for full-year 2013, indicating the worst is over economically. Fourth quarter cargo increased to 1.28 million TEU, 8.2 per cent more than in 2012.
"However," Drewry said, "the data is in conflict with Australia's port records, which show only 1.6 per cent annual growth, and customs data compiled by Global Trade Information Services, which shows just three per cent growth measured in tons. Container Trades Statistics is in the process of re-evaluating its data, so this may change in due course."
