TOTAL North American rail volume for the week ending June 30 for 12 reporting railways came to 377,509 carloads, up 2.7 per cent and 380,866 intermodal units, up 8.8 per cent year on year.
Total combined weekly rail traffic in North America was 758,375 carloads and intermodal units, up 5.7 per cent. North American rail volume for the first 26 weeks of 2018 was 18,733,684 carloads and intermodal units, up 3.3 per cent compared with 2017.
US railways originated 1,080,769 carloads in June 2018, up two per cent year on year. US rail volumes up 3.7 per cent in first half of 2018 year on year, according to the Association of American Railroads (R).
'Things are looking good for the railroads and the economy despite a potential trade war that could bring change quickly,' said R vice president John Gray.
They also originated 1,159,973 containers and trailers in June 2018, up 6.3 per cent. Combined US carload and intermodal originations in June 2018 were 2,240,742, up 4.2 per cent.
Canadian railways reported 84,694 carloads for the week, up 7.1 per cent, and 69,286 intermodal units, up 4.6 per cent compared with the same week in 2017. For the first 26 weeks of 2018, Canadian railways reported cumulative rail traffic volume of 3,840,282 carloads, containers and trailers, up 3.6 per cent.
Mexican railways reported 21,899 carloads for the week and 18,253 intermodal units. Cumulative volume on Mexican railways for the first 26 weeks of 2018 was 992,431 carloads and intermodal containers and trailers.
