THE Port of New Orleans hopes to acquire 1,100 acres outside the city for a $1.5 billion container terminal that will handle two million TEU annually beginning in 2027, reports IHS Media.
The new terminal will allow the city to handle larger vessels as the port and other Gulf ports such as Houston and Mobile aim to deepen and widen their channels to attract bigger ships on services to the region.
Prior to Covid, annual container volume at the port's single container terminal expanded 6.6 per cent annually over the past decade. The port handled 437,400 TEU in 2019 as well.
New Orleans officials have been interested in a container terminal downriver from the city for a long time. Projects have been planned and abandoned since the 1970s. The site of the planned terminal is down river and southeast of the city.
New Orleans officials have long been interested in a container terminal downriver from the city, which is 100 miles up from the river's delta, and projects have been planned and later abandoned since the 1970s. The site of the scheduled LITV terminal is down river, southeast of the city.
