Neopanamax broad beamed vessels get more cargo into shallow ports
THE neo-panamax 8,000-TEU wide beam vessels has seen increased use in first five months of 2013 at 31 orders to total 82 units sold in less than three years.
The newbuilds adopt a new compact wide-beam of 48.2 metres allowing 19 rows on deck and variable length from 299 metres to 332 metres. These versatile ships allow for access to ports with draft restrictions such as Latin America, South Africa and India.
It also can limit its length to create shorter designs of 299 metres to 300 metres to categories Black Sea-max ships (or 'Bosporus-max') due to its dimensions fitting the transit restrictions on vessels transiting the Bosporus.
Their compact shape makes them suitable for Panama (post expansion), in the FE-NCSA-Caribbean services or Europe-WCSA services, reported Alphaliner.
MSC has committed to 18 such vessels from China's Jiangnan Shipyard. Also ordered are ships for Costamare, Schulte Group, Zodiac Maritime and XT Shipping (formerly Ofer).
Since last September's delivery of MSC Altamira it plans to add a further eight vessels likely to be chartered to Non Operating Owners (NOOs) who recently ordered such ships.
The number of carriers to launch '8k-WB' newbuilding programmes total five: Hamburg Sud ordering ten 9,814-TEUers from Hyundai; CMA CGM ordered ten 9,289 TEU of which six are contracted with Dalian SB Corp and four at New Century SB Corp, all under lease from China's CIMC; CSAV has eleven 8,600-9,300 TEUers; Evergreen has ordered five 8,800-TEUer and CCNI has four 9,300 TEUers - Hanjin-Philippines.
There are a further 24 units on order either without charter commitment or by owners which did not reveal charterer details.
