MSC deploys ultra large containerships on Far East-SA-Europe service
GENEVA's Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is to deploy its first Suezmax ultra large containerships (ULCS) on its Far East-South Africa-Europe pendulum service with its 12,552-TEU MSC Fabiola and its 11,660-TEU MSC Luciana.
Its SAF service has seen vessel size increase incrementally since it deployed its surplus VLCS of 8,000 TEU in October 2010 to include a 10,000 TEU in June 2012 and then 11,660 TEU MSC Sola, reports Alphaliner.
Since the Swiss carrier united its Far East-SAF and Europe-SAF pendulum, it can transship between the Far East and West Africa at Ngqura which provides connections with East Africa through feeders.
MSC's operates the biggest fleet of very large containerships with 53 of 10,000 TEU or more and a further six of 16,000 TEU. Its Asia-Europe connections now deploy vessels with capacities between 11,500 and 14,000 TEU.
