MITSUI OSK Lines (MOL) has signed a joint venture agreement with SahaThai Terminal Co, a container terminal operator in Thailand, to set up a new barge terminal operation company in Bangkok, called Bangkok Barge Terminal Co, Ltd (BBT), as demand for barge transport is forecast to rise.
Due to the shallower water depth at the Bangkok river port, Laem Chabang port located 90 kilometres downstream has become the main gateway port of Thailand with its capability to accommodate ocean liners operating larger containerships, reported American Journal of Transportation.
The BBT-operated barge container terminal, slated to open in 2016, will serve as a new gateway to Laem Chabang for customers to move cargo to and from the outlying areas.
For its part, MOL has already expanded its container terminal operation at Laem Chabang port, to offer warehousing, trucking, and container and truck depot operation.
