Modern Express back on even keel, delivered back to owner
The "Modern Express" was back on even keel on Feb 22 at noon with only a slight list of five degrees remaining.
The cause of the severe list has not yet been released. The vessel will be returned to her owners, European Roro Lines, which will have to decide whether to unload the cargo early or to continue on with her intended journey.
Before departure, however, her systems will have to be checked for any damage due to the prolonged period of operation and tow at severe angles of list.
Modern Express delivered back to Cido Shipping
Smit Salvage finished its work and re-delivered the "Modern Express" to its owner, Cido Shipping, on Feb 22 at 4.35 p.m. in Bilbao. During the recent days a large amount of water was pumped out of the engine room and the decks 5 and 7, which would explain the sharp heel of the vessel. The source of this water was not yet clear, but no breach appeared on the starboard side hull, now visible. The charterer will be able to work hand in hand with the P & I club, since shifting of cargo is part of the management exclusion clauses by the P & I. It remained to be seen whether the cargo will be unloaded in Bilbao or if the vessel continues the voyage to Le Havre, its final destination or to a shipyard, especially in regard of the state of the engines.
