THE Port of Los Angeles handled 717,407 TEU in July, an increase of 0.25 per cent year on year, while Long Beach was up 3.7 per cent to 583,000 TEU, a result lower than June's 610,516 TEU.
Unlike May and June, which saw higher than usual seasonal volumes due to volatile west coast labour talks, July was down as retailers completed filling inventories for back-to-school shopping.
At Long Beach, imports in July rose 0.9 per cent year on year to 297,615 TEU while exports declined 6.2 per cent to 124,126 TEU. Empties achieved a 19.5 per cent increase at 161,319 TEU.
Year-to-date basis, Long Beach rose 2.7 per cent to 3,886,192 TEU. Imports increased by 3.3 per cent to 1,996,338 TEU, and exports were up 0.3 per cent at 977,224 TEU.
Los Angeles imports in July were down 1.98 per cent at 363,393 TEU, while exports rose 3.62 per cent to 163,294 TEU. Empty containers were up 1.82 per cent at 190,719.00 TEU.
For the first seven months of the year, total LA volumes were up 7.75 per cent at 4,769,634 TEU.
"This July was on par with last July," said LA port spokesman Phillip Sanfield. "Since additional cargo moved through LA in the last few months, it's not a surprise that July remained steady compared with last year."
