THE Port of marseilles Fos handled 38 million tonnes of goods between January and June 2021, an increase of 13 per cent compared to the first half of 2020, reports St Petersburg's SeaNews.
All types of goods traffic increased compared to pre-Covid crisis levels. New vehicles were up 18 per cent, chemical bulk 11 per cent, and solid bulk 11 per cent. Liquid bulk traffic was down seven per cent despite an increase of six per cent compared with 2020.
General cargo traffic increased 19 per cent. More than 10 tonnes of general cargo was handled in the Port of Marseilles Fos in the first half of 2021, an increase of 19 per cent year on year.
Container traffic saw 755,000 TEU handled, an increase of 21 per cent compared to 2020 and two per cent compared to 2019.
The trailer sector grew 31 per cent compared to 2020 and six per cent compared to 2019. New vehicles traffic increased 63 per cent compared to 2020 and 18 per cent compared to 2019.
'The Port of Marseilles Fos is experiencing a strong momentum and is benefiting from a favourable economic situation, particularly in solid bulk and container traffic. Regarding the container sector, it should be noted that at the end of 2020, the port provided the handling agents with a new 300 metre long quay with a 17 metre draught, offering a total unloading length of 2.6 kilometres and additional storage areas,' said Port of Marseille Fos head Herve Martel.
'This development came at the right time, enabling the port to accommodate a greater load: more ships, more goods, more storage areas, and therefore greater performance in operations,' said Mr Martel.
