CMA CGM conducts emergency drill with China's MSA
CMA CGM has successfully conducted its first joint emergency drill in Chiwan, China in cooperation with the Chinese Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) pollution control and safe navigation team, terminal operator MCT, Shenzhen Hangpeng Marine Environmental Service and local agents.
The training exercise was based on the scenario that a leak had been discovered in a container transporting dangerous or hazardous material on board a ship shortly before berthing. The aim of the drill was to teach the emergency response team on board and ashore how to handle such an emergency and to practice its cooperation with the Chinese Maritime Safety Administration.
The drill comprised three stages: the preparation of dealing with a leaking container on-board a vessel at sea by the crew as per the emergency manual and the handling of the container ashore by the MSA; the examination of the container by the authorities; and the discharge and treatment of the container ashore.
"The exercise displayed the professional and vigilant work of all parties involved. Lessons learned and further improvements have been exchanged. Further exercises are to come in order to continue the collaboration and readiness," a statement from the French shipping line said.
