A major fire broke out in the morning of June 17, 2018, aboard the 'Iron Chieftain' which was docked at Port Kembla, New South Wales, NSW. The bulkcarrier was unloading iron ore when the fire started at 03.40 a.m. The fire started in the ship’s hold and had gone part way down the ship’s conveyor belt, which transports the dolomite from the ship’s hold to the shore. The Port Authority of New South Wales suspended ship traffic in the port, while the Fire and Rescue NSW started the extinguishing work. The ship’s crew were evacuated after the fire broke out and everyone had been accounted for. No injuries have been reported. The traffic was resumed and the port reopened at 11.30 a.m. and was expected to operate at normal level around 5 p.m. More than 100 fire fighters were on site. They were fighting the fire which was inside and below from the wharf and the deck. Two ladder platforms were being used to battle the blaze from a height of 37 metres. Firefighters were awaiting a special fire-fighting foam from Sydney. Svitzer tugs were mobilized to support the fire fighting and coooled the hull. Oil barriers have been laid out as a precautionary measure, but no fuel or oil leakage has been observed. A Robot Bulldozer TAF20 has been on standby at the fire since 4.30 a.m., but has not yet been utilised. It is capable of shooting water 80 metres into the air. It was considered for use when the fire spread to a conveyor belt. There had been no damage to the BlueScope plant or equipment and there was sufficient stock of dolomite on shore to continue steel production. Police officers and the NSW Environmental Protection Authority were at the scene. The police diverted traffic away from Christy Drive, Port Kembla.
