THREE seafarers have been injured in an engine room explosion aboard the 21-year-old 8,450-TEU maersk Sana, reports UK's Seatrade Maritime News.
A salvage tug is understood to have been dispatched from Mexico to tow the stricken ship, which was en route from Newark to Singapore when Norfolk Rescue Co-ordination Centre received a report April 30 that the vessel was disabled and adrift 254 nautical miles east of Bermuda.
The Singapore-flagged vessel is deployed in the Gemini Cooperation alliance with Hapag-Lloyd, launched in February, and is one of a series of vessels on the service between Asia and North America.
Maersk said in a statement that the vessel had experienced machinery-related issues in the main engine room' and investigations into the root cause of the issue were underway.
Three were injured. One required only first aid on board, but two crew members with more severe injuries were transferred to the 4,045-TEU Maersk Nomazwe.
The two seafarers were then medevacked to Bermuda. One has since been discharged but the third seafarer remains in a critical, but stable condition.
'While our immediate focus has been on the safety of our crew, our teams are working as quickly as possible to identify operational contingencies to minimise disruption to our customers' logistics operations,' Maersk said.
