DENMARK's American operation, Maersk Line Limited (MLL), has purchased
and will reflag eight second-hand containerships to provide American
vessels for the government and commercial customers restricted to
national flag shipping.
Reflagging a ship ensures that it meets stringent American safety,
environmental, operational and compliance standards enforced by the US
Coast Guard (USCG) and other maritime authorities.
The eight vessels are Atlanta, Chicago, Columbus, Denver, Detroit,
Hartford, Memphis, and Pittsburgh. The Maersk Chicago was the first of
the eight vessels to be reflagged on May 1.
MLL has earmarked US$500,000 for eight vessels bound for service in the
Middle East and Mediterranean Sea from the US east coast. Maersk has
already spent $1.75 billion dollars to modernise its fleet in support of the US government and military since 2000.
"These eight newer vessels demonstrate our commitment to our customers," said MLL president and CEO John Reinhart, according to the American
Journal of Transportation.
The vessels will join Maersk Line's weekly Middle East Container Line
service (MECL1) throughout May and June. This route serves commercial
customers and the US military, and it transports US-grown food aid.
MECL1 will be the industry's only direct US flag service to and from the US east coast and Pakistan, and the service includes a new stop at
Algeciras.
