THE Port of Los Angeles is no longer America's leading port in terms of international trade value, having been surpassed in dollar volume by the otherwise obscure Texas border town of Laredo.

In the month of March, the latest US Census Bureau data available, Laredo's trade was US$20.09 billion while trade through the Los Angeles port's was $19.66 billion. Laredo's trade was up 9.52 per cent from February while LA's trade was down 10.01 per cent.

US trade with China fell faster earlier this year than at any time in at least 17 years, reported America's Forbes magazine, which half jokingly bills itself the 'capitalist conspiracy'.

China now accounts for a lower percentage of US imports than at any time since 2012. Mexico is now the United States' leading trade partner, having replaced China, said the report.
