LONG BEACH surpassed Los Angeles in box volume growth, rising six per cent to 635,250 TEU in May against LA's 0.8 per cent gain to 694,791 TEU.
Year-to-date, the number of containers handled in Long Beach was up 1.1 per cent, while volumes are down four per cent in Los Angeles.
These numbers are skewed slightly because of the labour slowdown, which contributed to cargo volumes plunging by 20 per cent year on year in January and February.
Volumes have recovered since the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and waterfront bosses of Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) settled.
May was the busiest month at Long Beach since October 2007 and the best May since 2006. The Long Beach port authority said solid demand for retail products is resulting in more import trade.
Long Beach laden import boxes were up 4.8 per cent to 327,317 TEU in May. Exports declined 7.4 per cent to 135,855 TEU with the big jump coming in empties, up 22.6 per cent to 172,078 TEU.
Oakland reported a 3.8 per cent increase in May box volume to 213,260 TEU.
Meanwhile major east coast port volumes grew seven to 14 per cent in recent months.
