LONG BEACH cargo volume increased 1.5 per cent year on year in November to 621,835 TEU, setting the stage for a second consecutive calendar year record for the seaport.
That was a growth gain on its San Pedro Bay rival, the Port of Los Angeles, that posted no growth. But the year-to-date gap remains between the two - 7.3 million TEU at Long Beach versus LA's 8.5 million TEU.
Last month's performance pushed Long Beach's 2018's year-to-date count up 7.3 per cent to 7,349,377 TEU, making it virtually certain the port will eclipse its record of 7,544,507 TEU set last year.
At the Port of Los Angeles, November was the fifth consecutive month when volumes were above 800,000 TEU, hitting 832,331 TEU, thus becoming the sixth busiest month in the ports history. Year-to-date volumes hit 8,555,490 TEU, nearly the same among year on year.
Said Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka: 'In November, we processed a number of high -volume vessels brought into service to facilitate the holiday season cargo surge and accommodate the push to import cargo before tariffs that were previously scheduled to increase on January 1.'

LB imports continued to outpace exports rising 0.2pc to 319,877 TEU while exports shrank 8.4 per cent to 115,774 TEU. Empties returning to Asia increased 11.4 per cent to 186,183 TEU.
Port of Long Beach executive director Mario Cordero said the Sino-American trade war has had an impact on cargo flow.
'American retailers are stocking up on goods made in China to avoid anticipated higher tariffs,' he said. 'Chinese businesses seem to be already looking to other countries for goods and raw materials, meaning there's less demand for American exports and more empty containers are being shipped.'
Separately, the Port of Shanghai's November container throughput fell 1.9 per cent year on year to 3.53 million TEU, according to figures from Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG).
November volumes also declined 1.1 per cent from October's 3.57 million TEU. In the first 11 months this year, Shanghai port moved 34.93 million TEU, a year-on-year drop of 5.2 per cent.
